Bernard L. Newton

Stowe, Bernard Louis Newton, 88, a long time Stowe resident died Friday January 23, 2015 at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. He was born September 5, 1926 in Orange MA., the son of the late Clifford and Helen ( Sanborn ) Newton. He graduated from Stowe High School in the class of 1944. Bernard enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. on August 17, 1945. He served two stints as a guard and Military Policeman. Corporal Newton was honorably discharged from his second tour of duty on January 9, 1948. In 1948 he married Mary M. McNall in Stowe. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage and raised three children. He was employed for many years on the Pike Family Farm in Stowe, now known as the Keewaydin Farm. Until he retired he was a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Stowe. Bernard was very active in the Stowe area community as a member of the Stowe Community Church, member and Past Master of the Mystic Lodge #56 F. & A.M in Stowe; a member of the Stowe Volunteer Firefighters, American Legion Post # 64 in Stowe , V.F.W. Post # 9653 of Morrisville. Bernard was proud to be a Shriner; performing many years as a clown at countless events. He was also a member of the Copley Country Club in Morrisville. He was an avid Red Sox Fan, golfer and member of bowling leagues in Waterbury, Morrisville, and Lowell. Survivors include his three children: Harold Newton and his wife, Gail of New Market, MD., Russell Newton of Essex Jct., and Carol Felton and her husband, Steven of Merrimack, NH.; three grandchildren: Michelle Felton, Christopher Newton ,and Elizabeth Colegrove; two great –grandchildren: Katherine Newton and Arden Colegrove. Bernard was predeceased by his wife in 2009, a grandson, Matthew Felton and a brother, Meredith Newton. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Stowe Community Church with the Rev. Bruce Comiskev officiating. Burial will be later in the spring in the Riverbank Cemetery in Stowe. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to the Stowe Volunteer Firefighters Inc. P.O.
