Eleanor Barrett Garland

Johnson Vermont: On June 3, 2015, with family at her side, Eleanor B. Garland of St. Johns Street died peacefully at Green Mountain Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Colchester, VT. Eleanor was born in St. Johnsbury VT on May 1, 1920 the daughter of Benjamin and Mabel Goodale Barrett. She grew up with her sister on a dairy farm in Plainfield where they shared summers with cousins who remained lifelong friends. Eleanor attended grammar and high school in Plainfield graduating in 1938. She attended Green Mountain College in Putney completing her education at the Mary Fletcher School of Nursing in Burlington graduating in 1942 as a registered nurse. Eleanor began her nursing career at Copley Hospital and later worked at a hospital in Ann Arbor Michigan. She returned to Vermont to help care for her ailing mother while working as night supervisor at Mary Fletcher Hospital. In 1946, she married Norman Garland. Together they farmed in the Marshfield-Plainfield area; eventually buying a dairy farm in Hardwick where they raised four children. Eleanor resumed her Nursing Career at the Hospital in Barre and came full circle spending 25 years at Copley Hospital before her retirement. Eleanor and Norman moved to Lamoille County in 1975 where Eleanor has lived for the past 40 years. After her retirement Eleanor provided volunteer respite care for hospice patients in the Lamoille County area. Eleanor is survived by her sister Frances Johnson of Worcester MA, her son and daughter-in-law Paul and Maria Garland of Wallingford VT, her daughter Carolyn Garland of Provo, UT, her daughter and son-in-law Lois and Michael Lynch of Shelburne, VT, her grandchildren and their spouses Nathan Toke and Debjani Chakravarty, Eric and Kate Garland, Tara and Kurt Bombardier, four great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many friends at St. Johns Knoll. She was predeceased by parents, her friend and ex-husband Norman Garland, her son, Walter. The family sincerely thanks Dr. David Roy, the Morrisville Family Health Center staff, Lamoille Home Health and Copley Hospital for their long time compassionate care of our mother. We are grateful for the sensitive skillful end of life care she received from the staff at Green Mountain Nursing Home and Dr. Elizabeth Hill. Our thanks go to the Rural Community Transportation (RCT) program and Meals on Wheels of Lamoille County. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Copley Hospital, 528 Washington Hwy., Morrisville, VT 05661 or Lamoille Home Health & Hospice, 54 Farr Avenue, Morrisville, VT 05661.

A memorial service will be held at the United Church of Johnson on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following. Burial in Plain-Mont Cemetery in E.
